2008 Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe
It features things like slender LED headlamps, a brushed stainless steel hood, and that stunning teak deck aft of the passenger compartment, designed to recall luxury yachts of the past.
When BMW took control of Rolls-Royce, a lot of people didn’t know what to expect from the highly traditional English automaker. Could the Germans build a better Rolls-Royce? Ultimately, it appears that yes, they can. This spectacular 2008 Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupé is evidence enough that fine motoring in the greatest tradition has not only been immaculately preserved, but taken to the next level.
The Drophead is almost a direct copy of the stunning 100EX show car that debuted at the 2004 Geneva Auto Show. A show stopper then, and just as jaw-dropping today on the public roads, it features things like slender LED headlamps, a brushed stainless steel hood, and that stunning teak deck aft of the passenger compartment, designed to recall luxury yachts of the past.
This Phantom was custom ordered in 2008, the first year of availability and is one of the earliest production Drophead Coupés in the US. Dressed in timeless black livery with that stainless hood, it is striking and elegant, the perfect epitome of Rolls-Royce elegance. It is commanding on the road, and until you’ve seen it in person, it’s hard to understand just how massive this Rolls-Royce is. Yet the proportions and styling mask its size, and somehow endow a car that is nearly 20 feet long with a sportiness that many of the earlier Rolls-Royce convertibles seemed to lack. Stunning front-opening doors (which Rolls-Royce calls “coach doors”) recall great custom bodies of the 1930s and allow unparalleled access to the interior. With less than 1000 miles on the odometer, this car is virtually flawless in every way, with no signs of use or damage on any of the exterior panels.
Inside, occupants are surrounded by the finest natural materials, evoking the experience of being on board a yacht. Those unique doors coach doors allow elegant entry and exit to and from the rear lounge seat that turns the passengers gently towards each other, creating a more intimate atmosphere. Swathed in the finest leathers, this one has been custom upholstered in cream with black accents, making for a striking combination. Rosewood was selected for the dashboard and console, warming the interior, and unique custom-fitted floor mats appear to be made of a natural sisal fiber, further strengthening the likeness to a yacht. The signature hood is made from five layers of material including cashmere, making it both quiet and luxurious when the top is raised. And I would be remiss if I didn't mention the car's trunk, or "picnic boot" as Rolls-Royce calls it, which has a split opening. In addition to the traditional trunk lid, there's a folding tailgate, which acts as a bench capable of supporting 330 lbs. Like the exterior, the interior is immaculately preserved and presented in as-new condition throughout.
Power is effortless, thanks to a BMW-derived 6.7-liter direct-injected V12 engine that generates 453 horsepower and 531 pounds of torque. In true Rolls-Royce fashion, the engine never seems to be working very hard, and the “wafting” sensation for which Rolls-Royce is justly famous is maintained, thanks to 75% of its torque being available at less than 1000 RPM. Wheels are massive 21-inch forged alloy units with unique bearing-mounted centercaps that keep the RR logo upright no matter how fast the wheels are spinning. With a low center of gravity and weight distribution slightly to the rear of the car, the Drophead Coupé's drive is as spirited as its looks suggest.
