1960 Ford Thunderbird Rare J-Code

J. J. Best Banc & Co.

Ford positioned the Thunderbird as an upscale personal luxury car, beginning production of the sporty two-seat convertible for the 1955 model year. In 1958, the Thunderbird sported a back seat, giving this 4-seater the nickname Squarebird. A hardtop model was also introduced in 1958, utilizing a unibody construction similar to that of the Lincoln Continental. The 1960 TBird had very few trim updates other than a third tail light on each side before a new generation arrived in 1961. While the designs changed through the years, the classic Thunderbird look remained distinctive.

This rare J-Code Thunderbird hardtop was purchased new in 1960 by its original owner. What makes this T-bird so rare is the optional upgrade to the J-code special V8 engine that was only available in 1959 and 1960. It displaces 430 cu in with 350 hp to power this exciting ride down the road like a speeding bullet.

It was driven from Texas to Ohio in 1997, according to correspondence in the files. When it arrived in Ohio, the odometer was at just over 73,000. Since that time, it has been driven approximately 1,500 miles, now recording 74,537 original miles. Only non-ethanol racing fuel has ever been used in the tank.

According to receipts, the engine was rebuilt at 59,166 miles. The master cylinder, flywheel, heater core, exhaust, brakes and carburetor were all rebuilt or were new at that time. The car then sat for years in a climate-controlled garage.

Since the car had not been driven in years, updates were performed in September 2019. An available, detailed invoice (shown in the pictures) lists $5,000-worth of work, including:

• new gas tank is from Birds Nest
• new electric fuel pump & fuel lines
• new Coker radials
• new battery
• new brakes on all 4 wheels
• rebuilt carburetor
• much more

The car has had only one repaint to its original color of Corinthian White in 1992. The black and white leather interior is still in excellent condition. The headliner is in good condition; however, there is a small hole above driver’s door, and the right front window glass is cracked.

The car has never been in winter weather, so there is no rust on the entire body. As expected, some surface rust appears on the undercarriage. The car panels and doors are solid and fit well with no sag. The chrome gleams and is in excellent condition.

This distinctive TBird includes power steering, power seat, power windows, dual side mirrors, air conditioning, fender skirts, radio and clock. All systems in the car work well except the A/C and clock. The original owner’s manual and keys are with the car.

The owner’s widow decided to finally part with this lovely antique in December of 2019 It could use a little TLC to bring it up to show condition, but -- with all the recent updates -- it’s an exciting ride just as it is.
