1960 Rare Ford Thunderbird J-Code

only 377 J-Code 430 cu in examples built
J. J. Best Banc & Co.

The Thunderbird began production as a sporty two-seat convertible for the 1955 model year with Ford positioning it as an upscale personal luxury car. In 1958, the Thunderbird sported a backseat, giving this 4-seater the nickname Squarebird. The hardtop was also introduced in 1958, utilizing a unibody construction similar to that of the Lincoln Continental.

The 1960 Thunderbird had very few trim updates before a new generation arrived in 1961. The most unique difference in 1960 models was a third tail-light on each side.

This is a rare 1960 Ford Thunderbird; there were only 377 J-Code 430 cu in examples built. The original owner purchased it new in 1960, and it was driven from Texas to Ohio in 1997, according to included correspondences. When this lovely antique arrived in Ohio, the odometer showed just over 73,000 miles. Since then, it has logged approximately 1,500 miles, now recording 74,537 original miles.

According to receipts, the engine was rebuilt at 59,166 miles. The master cylinder, flywheel, heater core, exhaust, brakes and carburetor were all rebuilt or were new at that time.

Later, the car sat for years in a climate-controlled garage. In late 2019, the owner’s widow decided to finally part with this classic. Since it hadn’t been driven in years, she spent over $5,000 to get it back in top driving condition. The detailed invoice includes:
• new Birds Nest gas tank
• new electric fuel pump and fuel lines
• new Coker radials
• new battery
• new brakes on all 4 wheels
• rebuilt carburetor

The car was repainted its original color of Corinthian White in 1992, and the original black and white interior is still in excellent condition. The car has never been in winter weather, so there is no rust anywhere on the body. As expected, some surface rust appears on the undercarriage. The radio and all systems in the car work well except the A/C and clock. The car panels and doors are solid and fit well with no sag, and the chrome is in excellent condition.

This lovely TBird includes power steering, power seat, power windows, dual side mirrors, air conditioning, fender skirts, radio and clock. The original owner’s manual and keys are included with the car. The headliner is in good condition; however, there is a small hole above driver’s door, and the right front window glass is cracked.

The 3-speed Cruise-O-Matic transmission makes it a fun drive, and the 430 cubic inch engine option powers it down the road like a speeding bullet. The owners used only non-ethanol racing fuel in the tank, as an indication of their care as well as its power.

This rare TBird J-Code is original with only one repaint. It could use a little TLC to bring it up to show condition, or you can drive it just the way it is for more fun than you can imagine in this exciting automobile.
